BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — A Boise man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after getting into a gunfight with law enforcement, stealing multiple vehicles, and leading police on a high-speed pursuit through Ada County communities.

On June 9, 2022, 40-year-old Jake Cottrellwas contacted by officers with the Idaho Department of Correction Probation and Parole at his home off Shields Avenue in Boise. When officers made contact with Cottrell, he pulled a gun and opened fire.

Cottrell stole a neighbor's vehicle and fled before stealing another in Eagle at gunpoint. He then led officers from multiple agencies on a high-speed pursuit through Ada County.

A Boise Police officer ended the car chase with a successful PIT maneuver. Cottrell then exchanged gunfire with police at the intersection of West Broadway Avenue and Northwest 1st Street in Meridian. 14 shell casings from multiple firearms in Cottrell's possession were discovered at the scene.

No officers were injured during the shooting.

Cottrell pled guilty in June 2022 to two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement and one count of robbery. All remaining charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

Cottrell has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, 20 years fixed before he will be eligible for parole.
