Clare Balding and BBC Blasted For Claiming Daniel Wiffen’s Gold For Northern Ireland

After Daniel Wiffen’s Paris Olympics win, commentator Clare Balding framed her sentence in a way that implied his gold medal was for Northern Ireland. Although she corrected herself in the next statement, the people had already caught on.

People immediately shut her out reminding her that Wiffen played for Ireland and that Northern Ireland was not in the Olympics. While at the other corner, BBC also found itself in the crossfire after they made the same mistake.

Daniel Wiffen made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the first Irish male swimmer to ever win a gold medal for the nation. Wiffen was born in England and raised in County Down. Therefore, he possesses both British and Irish nationality. However, he represents Ireland at the Olympic, World, and European levels.
