The Dallas Cowboys are the richest sports franchise in the world. The NFL franchise is allegedly valued at 5.7 billion dollars. Besides, the Dallas-based football team is also one of the most accomplished franchises in the National Football League. Self-proclaimed America’s team has been to 8 Super Bowl games and has won five championships.

In addition, the franchise is also the home to the legendary head coach Tom Landry, who holds the record for spending most seasons as a head coach. Landry held the HC position of the Cowboys for almost three decades, 29 seasons to be precise.

For more than the past three decades, Jerry Jones has taken the responsibility of being the owner, president, and general manager of the renowned franchise. But who did Jerry Jones buy the Cowboys from?

Who owned the Cowboys before Jerry Jones?

The Cowboys joined the National Football League as an expansion team in 1960. The founding investor and the team’s first majority owner was Clint Murchison Jr. After 24 years, he decided to sell the team to the American philanthropist H.R. “Bum” Bright, who owned the Cowboys for the next 5 years.

During those first 29 years, Tom Landry served as the head coach and led the Cowboys to 2 Super Bowl Championship rings. Moreover, the Cowboys still hold the record for the most consecutive winning seasons with 20 seasons from 1966 to 1985 under Landry.

Nevertheless, after the remarkable success of the Cowboys and after a failed attempt by Jerry Jones to buy a different NFL team, Jones, with the blessings of his family, purchased the Cowboys from H.R. “Bum” Bright for $140 million in 1989. It was the largest sale of the NFL team at the time.

How much success Jerry Jones has had since buying the Cowboys?

After buying the Cowboys in 1989, one of the first things Jerry Jones did was to fire Tom Landry, who was serving as the head coach for them for almost three decades. Besides, apart from being the owner, Jones also took the responsibility of being the President and general manager of the franchise.

Within just 5 years of his takeover, the Cowboys went on to win back-to-back Super Bowl rings in 1992 and 1993. In addition, they also won another Super Bowl ring in 1995. But other than that early success, the Dallas-based football team hasn’t really achieved anything in recent times.

Jerry Jones, as a general manager, has been able to identify talents in the draft but somehow failed to build a Super Bowl-winning team in more than the past two decades. Nevertheless, Jones has been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as an owner and a general manager in 2017 for his achievement over the past 35 years. But, he is still bearing the responsibility for America’s team, and at 80 years of age, he is still working hard to bring the Lombardi Trophy to Dallas.
